Crossword Genius

Kind that is four-eyed? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

species

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'kind' is the definition.
(I know that species is a type of kind)

'that is four-eyed?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'that is' could be 'ie' (short for Latin 'id est', 'that is') and 'ie' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'specs' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for species that I've seen before include "Sort, type" , "Taxonomic grouping" , "Groups of related plants or animals" , "Kind, sort" , "Kind of creature" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
