Lead deposit in athletic contest (4,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shot put

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'contest' is the definition.
(shot put is a kind of contest)

'lead deposit in athletic' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'deposit' could be 'put' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'put' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'shot' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for shot put that I've seen before include "Athletic field event" , "Competition in which a heavy metal ball is hurled" , "Field event in athletics" , "Olympic event" , "Throwing event" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
