'music' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both acts as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'liberal character's approval shouted during electronic' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'liberal' could be 'l' (abbreviation) and 'l' is located in the answer.
'approval' could be 'an' (AN is an example) and 'an' is located in the answer.
'electronic' could be 'e' (as in e-mail or e-books) and 'e' is located in the answer.
'character' could be 't' and 't' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for tolerance that I've seen before include "Ability to be fair" , "example of permissiveness" , "ecumenical spirit?" , "Allowable variation (in size)" , "Allowance for dimensional inaccuracy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
