Loss of home game is depressing (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ruin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'loss' is the definition.
(I have seen 'loss of position' mean 'ruin' so perhaps 'loss' could also mean 'ruin')

'home game is depressing' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'home' could be 'in' ('he's home' can mean 'he's in') and 'in' is found within the answer.
'game' could be 'ru' (rugby union) and 'ru' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for ruin that I've seen before include "Defeat" , "Destory or bankrupt" , "Destroy or bankrupt" , "Devastate" , "Reduce to bankruptcy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
