I believe the answer is:

The definition and answer can be both to do with social activities as well as being past participle verbs.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?
'cross?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'cross?' could be 'vote' (you cast a vote by drawing a cross) and 'vote' is found in the answer.
A single letter 'd' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
