Crossword Genius

Managed church and land (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ranch

'land' is the definition.
(I have seen 'agricultural land' mean 'ranch' so perhaps 'land' could also mean 'ranch')

'managed church' is the wordplay.
'managed' becomes 'ran' (both can mean organised or was in charge of).
'church' becomes 'ch' (abbreviation on maps etc).
'ran'+'ch'='RANCH'

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for ranch that I've seen before include "Hacienda" , "Where to keep stock" , "agricultural land" , "Cowboy's workplace" , "Large farm rearing particular livestock" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
