I believe the answer is:
making out
'writing the cheque' is the definition.
'making out' can be an answer for 'writing' (making out is a kind of writing). I am unsure of the 'the cheque' bit.
I don't understand the remainder of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for making out that I've seen before include "Pretending" , "managing to get on" .)
