Crossword Genius

More than one Protestant poet cutting alcohol (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

methodists

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'more than one protestant' is the definition.
(Methodist is an example)

'poet cutting alcohol' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'poet' could be 'odist' (someone writing odes) and 'odist' is found in the answer.
'alcohol' could be 'meths' (I have seen 'unsuitable alcohol' mean 'meths' so perhaps 'alcohol' could also mean 'meths') and 'meths' is found within the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for methodists that I've seen is " Worshippers".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
