Crossword Genius

Moves gracefully before the audience - grand final performance (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

swansong

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'final performance' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'moves gracefully before the audience grand' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'moves' could be 'swans' (swanning is a kind of moving) and 'swans' is found within the answer.
'grand' could be 'g' (G is short for grand as in a thousand) and 'g' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'on' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for swansong that I've seen before include "Final work or performance" , "Last act" , "Final appearance" , "last performance" , "Last call" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
