Crossword Genius

Musical group turning up that may be in the groove (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tenon

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'may be in the groove' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'musical group turning up' is the wordplay.
'musical group' becomes 'nonet' (group of nine musicians).
'turning up' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'nonet' backwards is 'TENON'.

'that' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tenon that I've seen before include "piece of carpentry?" , "Wood fitting into a mortise" , "Projection (joins with mortise)" , "Saw; joint" , "Nonet (anag.)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
