Crossword Genius

My darling returned for a dance (3-4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

one-step

'dance' is the definition.
(I know that one-step is a more specific form of dance)

'my darling returned' is the wordplay.
'my' becomes 'one's' ('one's' is a humorous equivalent to 'my').
'darling' becomes 'pet' (both are terms of endearment).
'returned' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'pet' written backwards gives 'tep'.
'ones'+'tep'='ONE-STEP'

'for a' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for one-step that I've seen before include "Foxtrot's precursor" , "Style of foxtrot" , "Vigorous dance" , "(Very short?) ballroom dance" , "Kind of foxtrot" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
