Crossword Genius

Network press pitch for Americans (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gridiron

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'pitch for americans' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'network press' is the wordplay.
'network' becomes 'grid' (grid is a kind of network).
'press' becomes 'iron' (ironing is a kind of pressing).
'grid'+'iron'='GRIDIRON'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gridiron that I've seen before include "cooking utensil" , "Scene of American football" , "Frame over fire for cooking" , "Football pitch" , "The field of play in American football" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
