Crossword Genius

New religious establishment supports empty hermitage from now on (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hence

'from now on' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'new religious establishment supports empty hermitage' is the wordplay.
'new' becomes 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament).
'religious establishment' becomes 'CE' (Church of England).
'supports' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (bottom letters provide a support for the top ones).
'empty' suggests removing the centre.
'hermitage' with its middle removed is 'he'.
'n'+'ce'='nce'
'nce' after 'he' is 'HENCE'.

(Other definitions for hence that I've seen before include "Thus" , "As a result" , "In the future; begone!" , "From this time, or for this reason" , "Therefore, consequently" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
