Crossword Genius

New Yorker putting duck in home for birds (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rookery

'home for birds' is the definition.
(where rooks might live)

'new yorker putting duck in' is the wordplay.
'new' indicates anagramming the letters.
'putting duck' becomes 'o' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'yorker' anagrammed gives 'rokery'.
'rokery' going around 'o' is 'ROOKERY'.

(Other definitions for rookery that I've seen before include "Colony of penguins or seals" , "Breeding colony of birds, also of seals or turtles" , "Noisy bird colony" , "Community of birds" , "Seal, penguin, colony" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
