Crossword Genius

Nosey types exploit IRS (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tapirs

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'nosey types' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'exploit irs' is the wordplay.
'exploit' becomes 'tap' (to tap is to exploit or make use of something).
'tap'+'irs'='TAPIRS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for tapirs that I've seen is " Creatures with heavy bodies and short flexible snouts".)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
