One of those known to make five? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bean

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'make five?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'one of those known' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'one' could be 'an' (an apple is one apple) and 'an' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'be' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bean that I've seen before include "Haricot or runner?" , "Broad, French or kidney?" , "kept by the counter?" , "Fava, kidney or mung, say" , "Vegetable, could be green or broad" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
