Out-of-form team wrongly positioned on field (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

offside

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'positioned on field' is the definition.
The answer and definition are different parts of speech. However, adjectives and past participle verbs occasionally mean the same thing.

'out-of-form team wrongly' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'out' could be 'off' (I've seen this before) and 'off' is present in the answer.
'team' could be 'side' (both can mean a sports team) and 'side' is found within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for offside that I've seen before include "Illegal football position between the ball and opponents' goal" , "Illegal state in football" , "A football offence" , "in no position to score goal" , "Dies off in illegal soccer position" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
