Crossword Genius

Painter of flier going round Central America (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

corot

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'painter' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'of flier going round central america' is the wordplay.
'of' becomes 'o''.
'flier' becomes 'roc' (I have seen 'Legendary flier' mean 'roc' so perhaps 'flier' could also mean 'roc').
'going round' says the letters should be written backwards.
'central america' becomes 't' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'o'+'roc'='oroc'
'oroc' back-to-front is 'coro'.
'coro'+'t'='COROT'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for corot that I've seen before include "French artist" , "French landscape painter, d. 1875" , "He painted" , "French landscape painter, 1796-1875" , "18c French painter" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
