Crossword Genius

Part of gut last to enjoy settlement (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

colony

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'settlement' is the definition.
(I know that settlement can be written as colony)

'part of gut last to enjoy' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'part' could be 'colon' (colon is a kind of part) and 'colon' is located in the answer.
A single letter 'y' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for colony that I've seen before include "Hive" , "Country under the political control of another and occupied by settlers" , "Group of organisms of the same type living together" , "Beavers' group" , "Group of animals of the same type living together" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
