Parts of a leg making moves? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gambits

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'moves?' is the definition.
(I know that gambit is a type of moves)

'parts of a leg' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'parts' could be 'bits' (bit is a kind of part) and 'bits' is found within the answer.
'a' is within the answer.
The remaining letters 'gm' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'making' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gambits that I've seen before include "Initial moves in a battle of wits" , "Opening moves" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
