Party wipe the floor for Labour? (5,3,4,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

paint the town red

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'party' is the definition.
(to paint the town red is to party hard)

'wipe the floor for labour?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'the' is 'het' which is within the answer.
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is found in the answer.
'labour?' could be 'red' (red is the colour of the Labour Party) and 'red' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for paint the town red that I've seen before include "enjoy celebration" , "Celebrate" , "get rid of the blues?" , "Go on a pub crawl" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
