Crossword Genius

Pass on the takings (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

turnover

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'takings' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'pass on' is the wordplay.
'pass' becomes 'turn' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'on' becomes 'over' (I've seen this in other clues).
'turn'+'over'='TURNOVER'

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for turnover that I've seen before include "Profit" , "Amount of money passing through a business" , "Quantity of business" , "money handled by business" , "apple-pie" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian, The Globe and Mail and The Telegraph.
