Crossword Genius

Pearly king no use working with chartered accountant (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nacreous

'pearly' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'king no use working with chartered accountant' is the wordplay.
'king' becomes 'R' (abbreviation for rex, king in Latin).
'working' is an anagram indicator.
'with' is an insertion indicator.
'chartered accountant' becomes 'ac' (I am not sure about the 'chartered' bit.).
'r'+'no'+'use'='rnouse'
'rnouse' with letters rearranged gives 'nreous'.
'nreous' placed around 'ac' is 'NACREOUS'.

(Other definitions for nacreous that I've seen before include "Scan roue for mother-of-pearl resemblance" , "Consisting of mother-of-pearl" , "To do with or looking like mother-of-pearl" , "Like shellfish" , "of oyster shells" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
