Crossword Genius

Place in short grass for standing (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

repute

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'for standing' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'place in short' is the wordplay.
'place' becomes 'put' ('put' can be a synonym of 'place').
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'short' becomes 'ree' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'put' inserted inside 'ree' is 'REPUTE'.

'grass' is the link.
This may not be correct. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for repute that I've seen before include "name" , "What is generally believed about a person" , "Known character, standing" , "Fame, renown" , "Distinction" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
