Porter place vehicle back in boat? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

coracle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'boat?' is the definition.
(I know that coracle is a type of boat)

'porter place vehicle back in' is the wordplay.
'porter' becomes 'cole' (musician Cole Porter).
'place vehicle back' becomes 'rac' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'cole' placed around 'rac' is 'CORACLE'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for coracle that I've seen before include "Small round boat of hides stretched over a wicker frame" , "Traditional rounded boat with wicker frame" , "Small rowing boat of wicker and hide" , "Oval rowing boat" , "Welsh version of the currach" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
