Prepared location for some nails? (2,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

on hand

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'prepared' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Perhaps you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'location for some nails?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'location' could be 'hand' (hand is a kind of location) and 'hand' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'on' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for on hand that I've seen before include "Where digits may be" , "Ready, available" , "available for use" , "Readily available" , "Available like wedding ring?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
