I believe the answer is:
ran off
'printed' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'hightailed it' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'hightailed it' could be 'ran' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'ran' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'off' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
