Crossword Genius

Produce milk and deliver after hours round Canberra area (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lactate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'produce milk' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'after hours round canberra area' is the wordplay.
'after hours' becomes 'late' (during late hours).
'round' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'canberra area' becomes 'act' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'late' placed around 'act' is 'LACTATE'.

'and deliver' is the link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lactate that I've seen before include "Produce milk" , "(Of female mammal) secrete milk" , "Exude milk" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
