Produce milk for baby: feat feeding past midnight? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lactate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'produce milk' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'feat feeding past midnight?' is the wordplay.
'feat' becomes 'act' (I've seen this before).
'feeding' indicates putting letters inside.
'past midnight?' becomes 'late' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'act' inserted within 'late' is 'LACTATE'.

'for baby' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lactate that I've seen before include "Produce milk" , "(Of female mammal) secrete milk" , "Exude milk" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
