Crossword Genius

Professional man who goes to work on foot (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

chiropodist

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'professional' is the definition.
(I know that chiropodist is a type of medical specialist)

'man who goes to work on foot' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'man' could be 'hi' and 'hi' is found in the answer.
'work' could be 'crop' (synonyms) and 'crop' is present in the leftover letters.
The remaining letters 'odist' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for chiropodist that I've seen before include "Specialist in the treatment of feet" , "Treater of minor foot ailments" , "Foot-doctor" , "Podiatrist" , "One treating the feet" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
