I believe the answer is:
endowing
'providing' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'due after death' is the wordplay.
'due' becomes 'owing' (similar in meaning).
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'death' becomes 'end' (synonyms).
'owing' put after 'end' is 'ENDOWING'.
'with gift' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
