Crossword Genius

Public school game in which score is four (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fives

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'public school game' is the definition.
'fives' can be an answer for 'game' (fives is a kind of game). I'm not certain of the 'public school' bit.

'score is four' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'four' could be 'iv' (Roman numerals) and 'iv' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'in which' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fives that I've seen before include "Indoor court game" , "Ball game" , "bunch capable of causing injury?" , "horse disease as before" , "Small numbers" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
