Crossword Genius

Pulled back from area of ground covered in grass (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

retracted

'pulled back' is the definition.
(to retract is to pull back)

'area of ground covered in grass' is the wordplay.
'area of ground' becomes 'tract' (a tract is an area of land).
'covered in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'grass' becomes 'reed' (I've seen this before).
'tract' placed within 'reed' is 'RETRACTED'.

'from' is the link.

(Other definitions for retracted that I've seen before include "disowned" , "Took back or drew in" , "Sheathed" , "Recanted, pulled back" , "Took back (statement)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
