I believe the answer is:

jeroboam

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bottle' is the definition.
(I know that jeroboam is a type of wine bottle)

'quantity of champagne? in france i travel carrying one-third' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'quantity' could be 'am' (A.M. is an example) and 'am' is found in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is found in the answer.
'one' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found within the answer.
'in france i' could be 'je' ('I' in French) and 'je' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'of' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for jeroboam that I've seen before include "Large bottle of champagne; a Rome job (anag.)" , "Very large wine bottle named after Israeli king" , "large sparkling container?" , "Four-times bottle size" , "Very large wine bottle named after old king of Israel" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
