Crossword Genius

Quiet socialists in scraps (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shreds

'scraps' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'quiet socialists' is the wordplay.
'quiet' becomes 'sh' (both can be said to tell someone to be quiet).
'socialists' becomes 'reds' (red is a kind of socialist).
'sh'+'reds'='SHREDS'

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for shreds that I've seen before include "Small pieces, maybe of bread" , "Torn pieces and tatters" , "Narrow strips cut or torn off" , "Scraps - fragments (of evidence?)" , "Rags, tattered pieces" .)

I've seen this clue in The Mirror.
