Rattling away, lift's avoided by American always in a hurry (7)
I believe the answer is:
swiftly
'in a hurry' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'rattling away lift's avoided by american always' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'lift' is 'iftl' which is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'swy' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for swiftly that I've seen before include "at speed" , "Quickly" .)
