Recalled a chart bearing an isthmus chunk? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

panama

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'isthmus chunk?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'recalled a chart bearing an' is the wordplay.
'recalled' shows that the letters should be reversed in order (to recall can mean to bring something back).
'chart' becomes 'map' (synonyms).
'bearing' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'a'+'map'='amap'
'amap' going around 'an' is 'amanap'.
'amanap' backwards is 'PANAMA'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for panama that I've seen before include "A great canal or a straw hat" , "Canal state; hat" , "Great canal in middle America" , "Great canal connecting Atlantic and Pacific" , "Country and straw hat" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
