Recalling battlefield doctor for mission? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

alamo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'mission?' is the definition.
(famous mission and siege from the Texas revolution)

'recalling battlefield doctor' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'recalling' could be 'ala' ('a la' something means in a way reminiscent of it) and 'ala' is found in the answer.
'doctor' could be 'mo' (medical officer) and 'mo' is found in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'for' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for alamo that I've seen before include "Mexicans invested in Texas" , "1836 massacre at a San Antonio, Texas mission" , "Fort in San Antonio, once famously besieged" , "don't forget it!" , "Texas mission taken by Mexican forces in 1836" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
