Crossword Genius

Red lips in Tory (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crimson

'red' is the definition.
(I know that crimson is a type of red)

'lips in tory' is the wordplay.
'lips' becomes 'rims' ('rim' can be a synonym of 'lip').
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'tory' becomes 'con' (abbreviation for Conservative).
'rims' placed inside 'con' is 'CRIMSON'.

(Other definitions for crimson that I've seen before include "Become red-faced" , "Blood-red" , "Blush" , "Looking embarrassed" , "Microns of colour" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
