Crossword Genius

Return of comic with, say, novelty (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gewgaw

'novelty' is the definition.
(I know that novelty can be written as gewgaw)

'return of comic with say' is the wordplay.
'return of' is a reversal indicator.
'comic' becomes 'wag' (wag can mean a comical person).
'with' becomes 'w' (short for with).
'say' becomes 'eg' (both can mean 'for example').
'wag'+'w'+'eg'='wagweg'
'wagweg' written backwards gives 'GEWGAW'.

(Other definitions for gewgaw that I've seen before include "Showy but valueless ornament" , "Worthless showy ornament" , "A trinket, showy but useless" , "Bauble" , "A gaudy and useless trinket" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
