Rose, shunning society, travelled by canoe (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

oared

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'travelled by canoe' is the definition.
The answer and definition are not the same part of speech. However, past participle verbs and adjectives sometimes mean the same thing.

'rose shunning society' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'rose' could be 'red' (shade of red) and 'red' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for oared that I've seen before include "As some boats flew" , "Like a rowing eight" , "ready for a row" , "Adore (anag.)" , "Provided with motive power" .)

I've seen this clue in The Everyman puzzle in The Observer.
