Crossword Genius

Safe or dangerous place to walk (6,2,3,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

middle of the road

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'safe' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'dangerous place to walk' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'place' could be 'middle' (middling is a kind of placing) and 'middle' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'or' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for middle of the road that I've seen before include "avoiding extremes" , "Unadventurous" , "white line often put here" , "Mediocre" , "square?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
