Crossword Genius

Scratch Saxon centrepiece (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

score

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'scratch' is the first definition.
(I know that score is a type of scratch)

'saxon centrepiece' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for score that I've seen before include "Orchestrate; twenty" , "Deeply scratch" , "Put ball in the net" , "Shoot a goal for a twenty" , "Chalk up - twenty" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
