Crossword Genius

Secure call coming to the point (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tapering

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'secure' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives. Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'call coming to the point' is the wordplay.
'call' becomes 'ring' (synonyms).
'coming to' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'the point' becomes 'tape' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'ring' after 'tape' is 'TAPERING'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tapering that I've seen before include "Narrowing to a point" , "Becoming less" , "Becoming gradually narrower like some candles (8)" , "getting less and less" , "thinning out" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
