Sell Sunday School part of a devil costume? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

retail

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'sell' is the definition.
(I know that retail is a kind of sell)

'sunday school part of a devil costume?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'part' could be 'tail' (tail is a kind of part) and 'tail' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 're' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for retail that I've seen before include "Flog" , "Sale of goods individually" , "I alter for trade that sells to public" , "Sell - tell" , "High street selling" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
