Setter unhappy when all becoming dimmer? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sundown

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'all becoming dimmer?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'setter unhappy' is the wordplay.
'setter' becomes 'sun' (I've seen this in other clues).
'unhappy' becomes 'down' (I've seen this before).
'sun'+'down'='SUNDOWN'

'when' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sundown that I've seen before include "when night life would start?" , "Dusk" , "one time in the evening" , "Sunset" , "Close of day" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
