Crossword Genius

Severely punished for being drunk (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stoned

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'being drunk' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'severely punished for' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'sned' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stoned that I've seen before include "Executed in Biblical way, or slangily drunk" , "Like Olive perhaps" , "Under the influence of drugs (colloq.)" , "High; intoxicated" , "Under the influence of narcotics, colloquially" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
