Shortened, like everything in numbers (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

digital

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'shortened' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are adjectives, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'like everything in numbers' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'like' could be 'dig' (to dig can mean to appreciate or 'get') and 'dig' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ital' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for digital that I've seen before include "of modern clock?" , "Like computer technology" , "Using fingers" , "Like modern cameras" , "Displaying in numbers like some watches" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times and The Sunday Times.
