Crossword Genius

Shrimp, possibly brown one that's tinned? (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crustacean

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'shrimp possibly' is the definition.
(shrimp is a kind of crustacean)

'brown one that's tinned?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'one' could be 'ace' (ace has a value of one in some card games) and 'ace' is present in the answer.
'brown' could be 'tan' (tan is a kind of brown) and 'tan' is found in the leftover letters.
The remaining letters 'crus' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for crustacean that I've seen before include "Perhaps crab" , "life form with hard case" , "Hard-shelled arthropod" , "Woodlouse, say" , "Hard-shelled animal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
