Crossword Genius

Shrub, a variety of brush (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

broom

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'brush' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'shrub a variety of' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'brom' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for broom that I've seen before include "Flowering shrub" , "cleaner" , "Leguminous shrub" , "one's often fitted in a cupboard" , "Plant - sweeper" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
